How Can You Make Free Calls To Any US Phone? It’s Magic, Jack.
April 20, 2008
If you’re like me, then you don’t sleep at night. And you might find yourself mindlessly watching hours of infomercials while wondering who buys this crap? I have a hard time believing any claim made on an infomercial. Especially when the word FREE is repeated ad nauseum. As a rule of thumb, the more times I hear “FREE” the more the item actually costs—the same goes for the happiness of the people in the commercial and my satisfaction with the product. But every once in a while, you see something that has potential, and you might just find use in it.
Enter: The magicJack.
In theory it appears to be the cheapest way to make phone calls to land-lines in the US, and on-par with Skype’s free internet-to-internet phone calls. The units are cheaper than Skype’s phones, $59.99 gets you the unit and a 1 year use contract. The jack itself plugs into any USB port and then you plug any normal land-phone into the jack. Then you start making phone calls. Two Magic Jack users can call eachother for free across the world as well.
As a raging skeptic, I tried to find proof that this is a scam. So far I have found none. And I’m kicking myself for not grabbing that great headset on the last Woot Off.
Motorola Internal Memo Tells Designers To Hold Hands
April 20, 2008
Motorola is making a last grasp at holding its Mobile Devices unit together. This past week an internal memo was passed around regarding the reassigning of hardware designers and software designers to work side-by-side. The perpetually optimistic, but declining technology giant hopes to relive the RAZR glory days by catering to the increasing demand for efficient and effective mobile software. And in a moment of morose honesty, Motorola’s CEO, Greg Brown admits “software is a major weakpoint for the company’s mobile handsets.”
This year has been an emotional rollercoaster for Motorola, who in January was consdering dropping its mobile devices altogether. After the immense popularity of the RAZR, every major release from Motorola has failed to live up to expectations. The market has become software and third-party support oriented, and lack of internal communication within the company has apparently left it far behind the consumer demand curve. In March, Motorola announced it was splitting the Mobile Devices unit from other technology, and this month brings new gusto for revamping the units.
With the push for open source software support technologies from companies like Google, and Facebook, is Motorola’s push for hope even reasonable? It appears they have nowhere to go but up, however, they seem to be staring at a glass ceiling into an entire market that has passed them by.

Good news for brits, iPhone UK price slashed
April 17, 2008

Good news for brits, the apple iPhone had a £100 decrease in price starting from April the 16th. There are currently no plans to cut the price of the 16GB version. O2 - The UK mobile network provider and Carphone Warehouse a major cellphone high street retailer announced there £100 price cut in the cost of the 8GB iPhone and it seems to be going very well. The reduction comesamidst the price cuts by T-Mobile in Germany.
The 3G-enabled iPhone is launching in June and it seems that T-Mobile and O2 are clearing the stock of the first iPhone model released to clear some space on the shelves for the 3G-enabled iPhone. The really bad thing recent for UK buyers of the iPhone is that O2 are not giving refunds on recently bought iPhones e.g the last month, due to the price slash.
Many users of the iPhone usually jailbreak there device as they disagree with O2’s exclusive deal with apple. When the 16GB iPod launches in the UK in June it will cost a staggering £330.
Although, when you buy an 8GB iPhone realise it will only have 7.3GB data storage for songs, videos and images available and a 16GB iPhone have 14.4GB available when both are empty as, the devices have additional software which takes up some of the memory.

Its not the first time the technology industry has seen a product repacked and aimed at gamers, this time its a iomega product, featuring their new media xporter hard drive.

iPhone ‘Style’ Media Player Showcased
April 16, 2008
Ramos Digital recently showcased their new V8 PMP in China. Though, still in development stages the company have released the designs for their new PMP (Portable Media player) which looks to have a extremely stylish GUI (Graphical user interface).
The new portable media player will support Mp4, Avi, DivX, RMVB, and also MP3, WMA, and FLAC file formats and includes TV output and a text viewer. Just like the Apple iPhone, the portable media player automatically detects rotation of the device and changes the on-screen imagery in accordance to which way round
the device is held.
Similar to switching from portrait to landscape mode. which is great for viewing windscreen movies, images and media. There is still no information on screen resolution, but would appear to have a 4.3” display and touch screen technology.
Although the price is still a mystery, I’d make a bet this will be a must have gadget for 2008 with its ultra stylish interface and array of supported file formats.
Military robots go crazy in Iraq
April 15, 2008
Recent reports of armed military robots deployed in Iraq have claimed that some have robots have been malfunctioning on duty. The most recent report claims that the ‘SWORDS’ robot made by Foster-Miller has been pulled off- duty due to ‘control issues’, when the robot began moving its gun randomly without direction from its human operator.
Reports claimed that the robots gun was swinging around like crazy at random. According to an army manager who talked to popular mechanic, this is not the case “SWORD is still deployed,” he added “we continue to learn from it and will continue to expand the use of armed robots.”
A spokesman for the developer Foster-Miller said “the whole thing is an urban legend,” and that the only times that the robot had any type of control issues was prior to its safety checks in 2006.
The army do seem to be very precarious about the issue of robots malfunctioning while on duty, which could lead to serious injury and a potential fatality saying “once you’ve done something that’s really bad, it can take 10 or 20 years to try it again.”
