That’s an amazing price for a 17 inch laptop with that spec, I paid £999 for my laptop with a lower about 13 months ago!

My Advent 9517 arrived on Thursday and I am so impressed, I don’t know how I lived without it! It is so quick and the screen is massive compared to my old model. I looked at other alternatives including a HP that was similar spec (smaller hard drive + less ram) which was actually more expensive. I am happy to say I have made the right choice! I only paid 480 quid for this amazing machine - great!

What is the webcam like on the advent 9715? I have seen other brands with webcams on and they appear a little dull. Any help would be appreciated.

  4. Richard on January 20th, 2008 10:30 pm

The webcam is great and is really easy to use, it integrates easily/automatically with applications such as messenger. The webcam is nice and bright too, so you should not suffer a dull picture! Hope this helps

Richard - just bought a 9517 but can’t find any way of operating the integral webcam. Would appreciate help there - thanx!

Hi Tony, It depends on which program you are trying to use the webcam in? If it is being used in msn messenger then all you need to do is click on the webcam icon within messenger (if this still does not work try pressing ctrl and f10 together). I hope this helps

I take this laptop has an integrated graphics system? Can you tell me which one?

    Cheers

I bought an Advent 9517 although quick and clear I am disappointed that it does not have an integrated mic. I went back to PC world as i was assured that it did have one so they gave me a plug in as compensation (wow) if anyone knows different please let me know

I have also found that there is no integrated mic although im no computer genius I thought this would be a given and something I havent even checked for. Gonna take mine to back to PC world an get a free mic as well

There is an integrated mic that works in messenger but I can not find software to get the mic to work independently or in any other programs. I would suggest running windows update to get the latest software for the laptop (this is one of the first things you should do any way) and also go to the advent site to update drivers as required.

  12. Sean on February 2nd, 2008 3:24 pm

Guys , did you have any luck setting up the cam to work on MSN ? I still cant get the integrated cam to work …

  13. Dan on February 12th, 2008 12:07 am

My webcam works in MSN messenger but what do you have to do to get the webcam to work normally? Im a computer numpty by the way.

    Cheers guys

Anyone know if you can add firewire or a pcmcia card to it?

  15. Richard on February 21st, 2008 8:37 pm

J - There is a pcmcia slot, so firewire can slot straight in :-) With regard to the webcam working in messenger, just click on the webcam button in messenger and it should start working. If not make sure you have the latest drivers by running windows update

bought an advent 9517 a few weeks ago, not too bad for the price really, given that we wanted a laptop more for email management and music playing, however has anyone else experienced the annoying levels during playback where any track playing seems to fade in and out of its own accord?????

Oh yeah any who decided to put the speaker out jack point on the front - this is a minor bug though - just have to arrange your left a little better when typing.

Plus looking at the reviews i should be going back to the store to claim my free mic!!!!

other than that its not bad for a 1st laptop and price does reflect this, but agree the large keyboard is a bonus.

here is something very fishy about theADVENT 9517
    NO INSTRUCTION BOOKLET
    WEB-CAM WONT WORK
    CONSIDERABLE PRICE CHANGES
COULD THERE BE SOME ”CONTRABAND” ITEMS ON THE MARKET
OR SO CALLED RECONDITIONED WITH PRODUCTION FAULTS
ITS WORTH A CHECK SERIAL NO WITH CUSTOMS AND EXCISE TO SEE IF MINE FELL OFF THE BACK OF A RICKSHAW

  18. Lauren on June 20th, 2008 7:15 pm

    My mic has never worked
do i have to install something for it to do so?

  19. Sam on June 24th, 2008 11:04 pm

have just bought an advent and guess what - cant get webcam to work either…… any ideas how to use it for Skype - i can see them but they cant see me and no option to click on a camera..
    Thanks

Got something to say?
