Apple has caused controversy again with an app dubbed a ‘gay cure’, the technology giants approved the app despite huge opposition even after the trouble caused by the Manhattan Declaration app late last year.
Exodus International, the app owner, wants to provide “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus” and is using the app to spread their message as any other organisation would. It provides the latest news and blog posts from the groups website. The app has received strong complaints from a group called Truth Wins Out.
Truth Wins out (TWO) is a non profit group whose aim is the exact opposite of Exodus International. Their goal is to stamp out anti-gay extremism and they have launched a petition on change.org to collect signatures of people who support their goals. TWO feels that the articles presented on the app are hateful and bigoted. They say the app uses ‘scare tactics’ and target young people by focusing on several suicides by lesbian, gay or bisexual teenagers.
100,000 113,000 strong petition is aimed at chief execs including Steve Jobs, it focuses on Apple’s own submission guidelines citing “any app that is defamatory, offensive, mean-spirited, or likely to place the targeted individual or group in harms way will be rejected.” As before with the Manhattan Declaration Apple has not responded.
Do you think Apple should have approved the app or indeed do you think it should be removed?
