Apple Inc., which launched its Apple App Store in 2008, is near on having 25 billion apps downloads and is giving out $10,000 to a lucky customer.
Apple owes its success to its visitors, especially those who visit and download apps from its App Store. Now users will see a countdown ticker, counting how many apps were downloaded in real time.
“As of today, nearly 25 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 25 billionth app, and you could win a US$10,000 App Store Gift Card,” showed the landing page of the Apple App Store.
Going to the mythical 25 billion mark is no easy feat. To put things in perspective, the company has celebrated its 10 billion app downloads almost a year ago, in January 2011. It also gave away a $10,000 iTunes gift card prize to a woman who downloaded the app Paper Glider. The company reached its 15 billionth downloads last July.
During a recent earnings call, the Cupertino tech giant revealed that its iTunes store, which is being helped by strong app offerings, has reached record total sales figures with £1.09 billion ($1.7 billion) revenue for the fourth quarter 2011, with £77 million ($120 million) worth of downloads on Christmas day alone.
Does this mean that Apple’s App Store is way ahead of its competition?
