BestBuy and Amazon.com have started taking pre-orders for Sony PlayStation Vita handheld video game consoles, which reveals the device’s launch dates in the United States and Canada.

Last week, news broke out that Sony’s upcoming handheld device will not be coming to North America until 2012. Now, Amazon is accepting pre-orders of the Wi-Fi only and Wi-FI + 3G versions of the PS Vita in the US, and said that the item will be released on December 31st. The Canadian website of BestBuy is also accepting pre-orders, which they plan to release on March 30 next year. Upon checking the BestBuy website, it says there that the device will be released on December 31St, 2012, which is clearly a typo.

The prices of the devices are in line with recommendations and expectations, but the official release dates in Canada and the US are still unclear.

According to an official statement from Sony, they intend to ship its next-generation handheld console by the end of the holiday season in Japan, to be followed by other regions some time next year.

The PS Vita will feature four powerful ARM Cortex-A9 cores and PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. The new console will sport a 5-inch multi-touch OLED screen with 960×544 resolution.

Pre-orders on other websites are expected to pop out soon, although we are still a month away from an official launch date announcement. Sony said that the announcement will be on September at the Tokyo Game Show.
