Activision is really on a hot streak, as the company announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 breaks sales records this week. Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 3 has surpassed the five-day sales record of the previous title holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops. According to a statement made by the company, the game has made more than $775 million (£490 million) in its first five days, compared to Black Ops’ $650 million.
In 2009, Activision also set the record with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
According to the Guardian, it seems that video game releases are bigger than films, as they compared the sales figures of both mediums. The following is the top five highest grossing video games, according to the site:
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ($775m)
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops ($650m)
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($550m)
4. Grand Theft Auto IV ($500m)
5. Halo 3 ($300m, seven days)
However, according to Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat, Modern Warfare 3 players log more gaming hours than those who play EA’s Battlefield 3. Even though Battlefield 3 has received a better critical reception among users, it did not succeed in engaging them as much as Activision’s Call of Duty franchise.
Robert Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s chief executive officer, said that the sales numbers confirm that the Call of Duty franchise is “one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world.”
