It’s been more than a year since the Apple iPad was released and despite the success of the iPhone Facebook app, the social networking site has yet to release a Facebook app specifically designed for the iPad.
According to reports from the New York Times, Facebook is planning to launch an iPad app in the “coming weeks.”
“One person who works with Facebook said Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive and founder, has been heavily invested in the process, overseeing design decisions and the app’s unique features,” said Nick Bilton of the New York Times. “People who have seen the application said it has a slick design that has been tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. Facebook developers and designers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the application. And the app will go beyond the features available on the Facebook Web site by allowing users to shoot and upload photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.”
Tech Crunch reporter MG Seigler recently discovered that the Facebook iPad app is carefully hidden inside its iPhone app.
“For the past couple hours, I’ve been using Facebook’s iPad app. Well, I should qualify this. I can’t be sure if this is the version they’ll actually ship, but based on everything I’ve seen, I’m going to assume it’s at least very close to the version they’re going to ship. While much of it is written with HTML5 (as you might expect from Facebook), the native iPad work is very good too,” said Seigler.
He was skeptical at first, but after talking with a source who has seen the app, it was confirmed that the app he was using is the same app Facebook it planning to launch. For now, all we have to do is to wait for an official announcement from Facebook.
