Dyson Dog Grooming Tool Sucks (up dog hair)

The British based home appliance maker Dyson, who are primarily known for making top end vacuum cleaners has announced a new innovation in pet grooming called the Dyson groom tool. The add on attaches to your existing Dyson to let you suck up hair, dirt and dust straight off your dog before it has chance to settle on the furniture.

The designers have made the grooming tool out of robust abs plastics and have spent many hours ensuring the steel bristles are at the perfect angle to allow hair to be sucked straight into the vacuum. They have also designed the bristles to retract and advance under thumb pressure, making it adaptable for different lengths of hair. This also ensures the bristles do not stick out when storing the device, this is important as normal brushes can be pretty sharp.

Dog hair is not man's best friend. But will this make man a dogs enemy?

I can see a couple of flaws with this gadget, the first is the price – £40 for a brush is pretty pricey. The second problem is actually using the device, as soon as I turn on my Dyson my dog shoots out of the room in fear – I can’t imagine he would stand still and actually let me brush him with the nozzle. Perhaps he is just a little skittish though as like most things Dyson has spent a long time testing and performing market research.

I like the idea of the dog groomer and my initial thought was that it could really catch on, I guess I will have to wait to test the device before I can be convinced myself. The device is already available on the dyson website and goes on sale later this month for £40 in Conran stores, it will be widely available in other outlets in Spring 2011.

    Hi Rach,

the head has retractable spines which makes it ideal for dogs with longer or denser hairs. You basically just use your thumb to extend the brush further, if your dog is shedding this should do the trick.

I bought the Dyson Dog Grooming Tool. Months later and many phone calls and emails later I had to return it as it doesn't fit on to the hose end of my Dyson DC05!! even though I checked the serial number with Dyson before buying. They expected me to fit it onto the 7" curved purple pipe on the end – try grooming your dog with all this on there – impossible!! Dyson have cocked up in not checking the full working compatibility with the older models. BEWARE before you buy even if your serial number seems ok on their website!

Had a look at it in Conran. Good idea but how long before those spines get bent (like they do on dog brushes) and the retractability, which moves hair from the spines into the vacuum tube, becomes useless?

After looking at the Grooming tool at the gadget show live, I have to say it is actually pretty good. I raked it over some robust carpet and the bristles were fine.

I got this for my Dyson DC24 Animal. Very pleased with it – often it feels as if a bed of dog hair is forming over my carpets, and this has definitely helped reduced that. Would recommend it, although my dog was scared of it at first!
