First YouTube Video to Reach 1 Billion Views: World Has Officially Gone Mad

Isn’t it great to be able to look up music videos on YouTube? Anyone who can remember having to wait patiently for Top of the Pops or the Chart Show to get their musical kicks will appreciate the chance to see whatever they want any time that suits them.

There is an almost endless amount of new and classic music videos to be found online now and anyone who enjoys riffs, solos and raps should find enough here to keep them entertained for a long time. Probably forever if we are being honest.

So this just brings us to one question; why on Earth are you all looking at that Gangnam Style video? Oh, you know the one we mean alright. It’s the one that goes “something something something sexy lady something else”.

Gangnam Style by some South Korean chap called PSY has become the first YouTube video in the history of the world to reach 1 billion views. This is surely a statistic which will shame our generation in years to come.

Baby Gets Knocked Off Top Spot

gangnamThe video was posted online in July. According to Google, the cheesy video which accompanies it gets viewed up to 10 million times each day. In case you were wondering, the previous holder of the title of most viewed YouTube video was the equally classy Baby from Justin Beiber.

Music industry experts have suggested that the song could have generated a staggering £5 million by now thanks to YouTube royalties and advertising usage. It is almost enough to make you wonder whether you could come up with a weird song and a few equine based moves of your own.

"why on Earth are you all looking at that Gangnam Style video?"

Because it's a cheap, catchy pop song, and a damned good one at that- it's called 'pop' music for a reason. It's written for mass consumption, to be 'popular'. There are thousands upon thousands of songs that I think are better, but they will only be viewed on Youtube by people with the same eclectic musical tastes- so it shouldn't be surprising they aren't at 1 billion views.

But hey, I'm no music snob, I like the song. I've probably given it ten of those 1 billion.

Well, it's a fun and infectious song – never mind if I can't do the horse dance as good as Psy. Let's face it, the man and the song are a rare phenomenon.
