Gamers Voice Opinions as Playstation Network is Still Down

Posted on Apr 23 2011 - 11:30pm by Thomas Sharp

Earlier today Sony posted another update that they hoped would calm irate gamers who are angry because the Playstation network is still down. Many gamers were simply asking for a reason for the delay in re-launching the PSN network.

To be fair the blog post did explain that ‘external intrusion’ meant Sony had to shutdown the Network to investigate and protect the integrity of the network and its users. This has gone some way to quell angry reactions although many feel it an inadequate update and are demanding more details.

One of the cleaner comments asked: “Wow horrible PR for real. All you got to say? ETA, anything else? If i was getting [sic] paid $100,000 + a year, I would update the community with more then a sentence or two every few days.” Which seems to be the general consensus between a lot of gamers.

Another common theme involves general anger towards the ‘external intrusion’ which is widely believed to be either hackers, a DDOS attack or gamers finding a way to access games for free causing Sony to shutdown the PSN to plug up the holes. What ever the reason PS3 gamers are very annoyed that a slim few have caused trouble for the majority.

Not all gamers feel the same though; others suggested quicker ways for Sony to spread news, Ramage posted: “I’d say you could get the word out quite a bit faster using twitter. Thanks for the update”. To be fair they are using Twitter to post links to their updates so we guess ‘Ramage’ meant the content and frequency they are using social media to get the word out.

Some also managed to keep a sense of humour, Yazter posted on the official PS Blog: “So was it anonymous or Skynet?” Where as others wished Sony luck and gave them words of encouragement.

So a wide variety of reactions, a great deal of which we have accepted and enjoyed on our own comments section. Feel free to explain your thoughts below, be them positive; negative or just humorous (just keep it clean as you can :-)).

unfortunately for all the computer tech illiterate hackers will always find a way of hacking systems for example when the iphone 4 came out it took them a couple of weeks to find a way of breaking the code and apple said it couldnt be broken

that is the dumbest i every heard, we payed for the system, the games, headsets. Any sales made by ps3 has a certain percentage of profit going into managing the network. They just diverted the expense and get their budget from somewhere else. Microsoft is just direct.

I’m getting very annoyed with the whole situation! I can understand a Day to tie up some loose ends but all the money Sony makes with all there products world wide you would think they would have some of the best equipment and personnel to get the job done fast and efficient. I can see now its just the opposite!

Sony seem to be failing miserably in their responses, either via the blog or twitter. they are missing one important point in that if the "external intrusion" has resulted in the loss of any customer data then they have a rather large number of possible victims being told nothing about what if any of their data has been put at risk when a simple statement explaining a little bit more about the incident that has now caused the network to be down for so long.
The fallout from this is not only going to hit them with their PSN members being reluctant to spend money with them but also their partners like LoveFilm who are losing revenue hand over fist with nobody able to stream content (and pay for the privilege)
Sony are rapidly heading themselves into an embarrassing corner, after all is said and done, did RSA and Barracuda wait this long before coming clean.

The Xbox is looking like a better console… I wonder how long it will be for Sony to put a charge on the use of the network, maybe this is what they are in the process of doing.

  15. WildfireV2 April 24, 2011 at 12:06 am - Reply

Its beyond a joke now, When Sony told us itd be a "day or two" it seemed important and we all thought ok, its fine, we can wait. Now theyve exceeded that limit and are still only giving us snippets of information. They cant turn around and say "its a free service" either, because I as well as many others, am a playstation plus subscriber. We pay over £300 for the console, and an average of £40 per game for reliability issues, games which dont have dedicated servers, and poor customer service. I think it was a huge mistake selling my xbox, Even though ive been a PS gamer my whole life, and probably will remain one, I still think they are now an inferior company to Microsoft in the gaming industry

  16. LucyFaye April 24, 2011 at 12:09 am - Reply

Yes I am rather miffed about the network going down but there are other things to do in life than bitch and moan about something that can't exactly be helped! It isn't sony's bloody fault they said ''external intrusion'' so basically, it's more than likely some sad-ass gamer or hacker trying to cheat their way into things because they're too lazy or rubbish to work for anything. AND if you want to play your PS3 there's millions of things to do OFFLINE aswell y'know. Don't you remember how you all managed to survive with the PS2? lol. Yeah I agree that Sony don't seem to be doing enough on the side of informing us about their progress, a sentence or two every few days is NOT enough. But i'm just going to try be positive and take it that that means they're too busy trying to sort out the mess that the sad-ass little hackers or whoever have caused. You're not even PAYING for the online pay anyway remember, it's free for the PS3 so try be grateful you ever get it in the first place and stop bitching and moaning when it's taken away from us beyond their control!

    • WildfireV2 April 24, 2011 at 12:56 am - Reply

      Not even paying for online?

PS Plus…. And dont forget that PS3s cost about £100 more than a 360 on average, 360 costs LESS than £40 for 12 months online, Its actually about £33 if im correct, so thats 3 years of a better console, a better online service (360 is FAR superior online to PS3), and better customer service before the 360 gets to the same or similar cost as the PS3.

      Think about what youre saying.

      • Jaymz April 24, 2011 at 12:51 pm - Reply

I would disagree with the far more Superior online, From my experience xbox wouldnt connect wirelessly at all.
Xbox You have to pay for a wireless adapter £40, Then you (as you state) Pay the subscrition fees. Not many quality games on the xbox,
. And the xbox dies alot easier so Microsoft can get even more money out of you, to replace.

Xbox doesnt have these outages? Thats because Xbox has nothing thats worth a hack or two!

Each to there own opinions though 🙂

    • Danny April 24, 2011 at 3:01 am - Reply

agreed! its good that some people actually understand what sony are doing for us 🙂

    • Kman April 24, 2011 at 7:37 am - Reply

at the end of the day, microsoft's xbox 360 doesn't EVER have this problem. With almost every game out there using some sort of online feature, it is absolutely unacceptable for sony to take this long to dissolve this issue.

all this is due to sony's neglect to address network security and measures to bring the network back up in timely fashion. let there be a new network that is better than psn or miscrosoft's xbox, one that does make the mistakes that these two have already done.

i am very very mad…First of all five of my friends have already switched from ps3 to xbox 360 for good due to this long maintenance that sony is currently doing… I mean this was a long weekend people, i was so happy when i got home and I see: error code… and the next day: Psn is currently undergoing maintenance…! The other part is no one is happy this is what I mean: first of all the players (owners of ps3 that play online daily) are mad because they cant play huge games such as call of duty series… second of all the workers at Sony are probably mad because they were hoping to relax in this long weekend too however, many of them are probably working hard to get it fixed. Which should be taken into consideration!

External Intrusion??? Well if it was hackers I would like to know who and why? I mean who dothey think they are fighting for? And who convince them this was the way to do it? People fought in court so youcould do whatever you please with your iphones (unlock, jailbreak, etc) and they won, therfore making it perfectly legal for users to tamper with their iphones. That is how you do it. Is Sony right to keep us from mesing up with the PS3 OS and everything else PS3 related? I don't know but it has worked so far, and if that is the way it is well, i will keep buying my games and enjoying them just the same. So why would a group of @#$#@#$ would want to take that away from the rest of us, who knows. For now, Sony has my support and I wish them the best, I hope you get the external intruders.

Well first off its not the end f the world bide your time with another activity, now I like psm jus as much as the next guy but getting upset over something no one could have controlled is stupid, but I will say rumors about psn going to charge is bad for the fact that a good bit of fanba is because of free online gamimg it would only hurt sony in the end because first the timing would be horrible, second you have people that may not be able to afford it but can afford to buy things via ps store so charging would only make things worse for sony at the moment. In conclusion I hope psn a quick fast recovery an better luck in the future for this is just a stepping stone

Have to be honest I'm 44 yrs of age and completely pissed over this. Since the first ps console come out I have always argued with friends ,family work mates that Sony was the console to own when it came to gaming.
As the years have passed and games progressed to online activity giving us chance to annihilate and intimidate opposition from around the globe I feel that Sony have let me down.
When online appeared for Sony the servers and service was a constant let down. Trying to log on , trying to get into an online match etc etc the list builds. So I left Sony t join xbox I will openly admit, yes I was paying a premium for servers but for me I wanted to game and Microsoft gave me that. The servers were better ,loging in quicker, joining matches etc etc. In the back ground though I was begging Sony to get things right.
In the end yes, the servers became better, I was getting to do what xbox had been doing for £40 a year, and Sony was giving it for free. The xbox went without a bat of an eye lid. I rejoiced . I grabbed a new ps3 slim bought the games I had on xbox for ps3 , I was happy. Now……all of a sudden my mind state ,my world is collapsing around me bringing the old woes back.
For me the xbox is the inferior games console, however everyone wants reliability , continuity, and better PR.
Please don't let me or the millions of Ps3 consumers down, get it sorted ,get it right. Then give something back to those millions who have spent hard earned cash and still stand by the Sony brand.
Last thing I would like to comment on aswell.
Sony can u please ensure if u release next generation electrical goods can u please make sure that accessories are available at the same time as the product.!
Just purchased a brand new Sony bravia 3d led tv …nice, but hey no glasses. Why because they are not available yet. Madness.

Sony is amazing, I have both and my xbox repeatedly signs out of live in the middle of CoD and the psn never signs me off, Why? Because the Xbox is the worst system ever. First of all, you have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of accessories Just to play online ( hard drive, wi-fi adapter, headset etc) Sony makes their systems practical, their headset? bluetooth. Xbox headset, Microsoft ONLY. Controller charger? Oh, wait the xbox controllers still run on crappy batteries EVEN THOUGH THERE IS SO MUCH EMPTY SPACE IN THE CONTROLLERS! Psn gets much more exclusive content, has much better graphics, can play blu-ray, lets you have any songs or videos or pictures on your console. And it even let's you personalize your themes, Build your own theme for free! But microsoft makes you pay for their crappy, expensive themes! SONY PS3 FTW! And to all of the guys that are switching to xbox, good luck a*holes, let's see you cope with the million malfunctions that everything microsoft has! microsoft is a terrible company full of flaws, and now that sony makes ONE mistake that was BEYOND THEIR CONTROL!! You guys still think that the xbox has less downsides? I have both systems, both slims and originals, ps3 slim+original>Xbox slim+original. Don't be a whiny little b* and wait. That is all.

Dirtyarry your world is crashing around you? your 44? and you argue with friends family and your work mates? I don't mean to rant at you but the network is down for while to BETTER the system, when its done it will be more sustainable. Most network problems with sony come from your own internet connection, if its set up right like mine then you rarely get signed out. I don't mean to come across as attacking your age in this as I think the PS is for everyone, but what I will say is that your 44 and you've stated you know people, a simple option here is go and spend time with those people, go out and do something real, at 44 (and with comment of work mates) i'll presume your employed, which shows you have money, so get outside, go socialise with people, see your family, friends or work mates and don't let your world "crash around you"?

Okay, I'm a games design student and I can tell you that finding an individual virus/bug/system breakage in all of their network is VERY difficult. They are being attacked by a group of external hackers who will have (sadly) been planning this for a long time, the hackers are quite obviously not going to make the fixing of their damage an easy job for sony. Yes, they make large amounts of money, but they are no doubt putting every bit of their efforts into fixing the problem and getting the network back online as soon as possible. If you rush things then your far away from perfection, but if you take your time on it then perfection is just around the corner, wouldn't you all rather have a properly fixed system rather than a rushed poorly fixed one? Ranting at sony to hurry up isn't going to make it come back online any faster, and if you want to moan about how your going to go buy an xbox, then fine, you don't need to tell us if you want to get yourselves a crapper system. And one more thing, the ps3 cost 3x the price of an xbox so yes the cost of the ps3 goes towards network management so "you get what you paid for" is the most retarded comment that could have been posted!

No you paid extra for blu ray you noob

      • Sam April 26, 2011 at 2:36 pm - Reply

Nothings for free, and with every single playstation being sold that equals a lot of money, you do pay extra for blu ray yes, but your still paying the extra for the free playstation network. ALL costs go into the Playstation price then their profit margin you "noob"

sorry but all you guys that are so angry need to get a life, yeah its dissappointing that the network has gone down but we dont pay for it, and if the network has been hacked then the security of the network will be at risk, which means information about the users may be able to be accessed, like addresses, credit card details, etc im a little annoyed that this has happened but im not angry because unlike xbox we dont pay for the service, sony will be working its arse off to get the network up and running again but it WILL not rush the re-launch because that way it could put its users at risk, im a lifelong sony and playstation user and fan and they have always had our best interests in heart so if it is down for this length of time then you can damn well be sure that its something massive, sony trys to deliver the best services possible which is hell of alot more than more than microsoft does, so instead of slandering them and saying that they are rubbish why dont you be patient and wait for the service to re-launch, because which would you rather have, them rush it and your personal details be frauded/accessed and something like this happen again or it be done properly with no shortcuts (by the way, you do realise there are other things to do, like get a life) sorry to all those people that are actually being level headed and being patient, this was no aimed at you.

Everybody just be patient, If Sony is taking a long time to fix the problem its probably because they dont want this to happen again in the future and cause this much of a delay. If i was Sony i would find a way to repay us playstation users im a VERY good way! I just Sony the best but to hurry up at the same time.

I remember when XLIVE was down for almost 2 week, in 07, anyone else remember this? so if you want an xbox go and buy one, it won't make sony cry, they don't care, and neither do we, all servers break down, once in a while, so do something else in the mean time.

  74. RockerLOD April 24, 2011 at 4:30 am - Reply

I'm sure Sony is losing a lot more than any of us due to the network shutdown… They are a business, their ultimate goal is to make money.. If people would just BUY stuff, instead of hacking and STEALING I'm positive all of us would be online.. But some have to cheat and steal and screw it up for all of us… Be mad at the hackers… Not Sony. I do agree that the PR in this situation is terrible but they have more pressing matters to deal with… Relax, there is more to life than vids…

yes indeed sony was attack before my guess they probably found the problem from the past but they did not take action to resolve it. maybe this is the year they could fix this problem its to impossible to fix a server in a day sony is taking there time to resolve this issue so in the future wards this issue wont happen again. The only thing I'm wondering is that why can't sony make a back up server?

  77. WahWahWah April 24, 2011 at 5:26 am - Reply

There's something positive to be learnt from this, the obesity rate in America is going down everyday with the PSN being offline. The negative, parents must be freaking out now that they don't have the ultimate babysitter to keep thier little kids busy. Pretty sad when people can't live without thier PS3's.

  78. VWJunkie April 24, 2011 at 5:42 am - Reply

i think psn is just redoing the hole online setup so its not so easy to hack. They also may be fixin the little things in the online world that have been bugging us for to long.. Like on GT5 , the mics are a big problem with bad conections to the point of not being able to hear your online friends very well..

Because of Sony I bought a house today . I could have stayed home and play black ops if the network was up

  80. col66677 April 24, 2011 at 6:47 am - Reply

    This hole situation is crap.
Even thou we don't pay to use the sony network to play our games online unlike xbox, Most of us brought ps3's because of this free network so in away we have payed to use the network.
Nothings ever free so don't you think Sony would have incorporated this in there price of there consoles.
I think we are still in titled to some sought of compensation even if it is double xp points or free movies at least something. Just because there network is free doesn't mean that they should not have been prepared for an attack like this, so why should we sit back and praise sony for there efforts, a company of this size should have resolved this issue by now or does some hacker sitting in the back room of his house have more knowledge about the sony network then sony them selves???
Come on Sony you can't expect you loyal customers to say "oh that's alright"
Yes Xbox does have its flaws also but I can say I have never heard of its users being unable to play for such lenghts of time.
Sony you have some major issues and I think the first one to deal with will be your customers.

  81. Lee April 24, 2011 at 9:10 am - Reply

Sony have always been a company that loves to control you, they even put spyware into their hi-fi systems. I wouldn't touch a sony product with a bargepole anymore. The ps3 was used as a way to get people into purchasing blu-ray so you can purchase overpriced films. They products use to stand and be reconised for quality and durability, last couple of things i've brought of them prove that not to be true anymore.

Quite the complaining, the whining, and the moaning. It's ie to enjoy life as it was back in the days of no electronics, computers, and games.

  95. DaiShandy April 24, 2011 at 9:40 pm - Reply

So Sony's latest post on Twitter (5 hours ago) was that there is no new information. There obviously is plenty of information but they just don't want to share.
For those who have been saying that it's "anonymous" or someone doing it for a cause, I think that's unlikely. If it were a straight denial of service then maybe, but if the stories (allegedly from "un-named" Sony insiders) are to be believed then there have been some serious compromises of their internal accounts, which has to make you wonder how much information have they lost. I do find it a bit disturbing that Sony seem so reluctant to avoid telling anyone either way whether personal data has been compromised or not.
Yes the loss of online gaming is a bit annoying but the unwillingness to keep their customers advised of any risk (or lack) is more than a little disturbing.

  96. Pras April 24, 2011 at 11:07 pm - Reply

Why dont we all stop complaining to each other and send sony some emails. You think they care if we whine to each other on some other website? No. Lets be proactive and write to them.

  97. Olle April 25, 2011 at 12:24 am - Reply

Sony better throw in some perks with the re-launching of psn network. Fair enough it got hacked but they should have protected it in the first place. I have games that only play (worth playing anyway) on psn network. We should get a proper upgrade with psn network, maybe £10 worth of DLC's or something. They need to make up for it, if they simply re-lauch and say 'sorry' then that's not good enough.

I know,Lets annoy SONY so much that they cave in and put the PSN network up just to keep us Quiet.
Then when some HACKER uses anyones PSN details to steal there ID or CREDIT CARD details well all laugh and say “WHY DID SONY LET THIS HAPPEN ?

Patience is a virtue and how can we moan at something that after all is given to us for FREE !

Go do something more constructive woith your time for a while, and when SONY have made our FREE psn network safe, well all be back on looking for something else to moan about 🙂

Just my opinion, you dont have to take notice, but i am entitled to it 😉
