Glucowatch Monitors Blood Glucose Through Sweat

Posted on Jun 15 2011 - 4:51pm by Richard Sharp

We have just received word of a new watch that will allow diabetics to accurately check their blood glucose level without the need of a blood sample.

The traditional way of checking glucose levels is to prick a finger to check the blood but the Glucowatch uses perspiration instead.

The watch was designed by Christopher Stamp, and uses sweat to monitor blood sugar level on the users wrist. He conducted scientific research before creating the final design we see here, after all you wouldn’t want to create something this snazzy for the tech behind it not to work like a dream.

The watch uses a slap strap, which allows a snug fit around the users wrist that contours perfectly whether the user is hot or cold meaning it is working all the time. The LCD screen displays the blood sugar level and of course the time, it also has a unique way of informing users if their blood sugar level has dropped to a low level.

The watch can be programmed to either emit a sound or simply vibrate to inform users of changes, the red stripe around the band also serves a purpose. The outer area of the strap supposedly creates a positive energy which makes the user feel good about themselves and the inner layer contains a replaceable sweat band, which is essential for the device to work.

Like any good gadget, the Gluco watch can be hooked up to a PC or Mac via a Mini USB port to download data from the day. It’s a clever device that we hope will help simplify diabetes suffers lives going forward.

I hate to bust everyone’s bubble but this watch will never make it to market. There have been other watches that did the same thing. For example there was the GlucoWatch G2 Biographer developed by Cygnus Inc and approved by the FDA in in 2002. Where is this device today? Animas Corp paid $10 million in cash for the intellectual property rights, production equipment, License agreements and inventory then promptly shelved it never to be seen again. The companies that sell the testing strips and even the continuous glucose monitors that have the sensor that cost $400 a month all stand to lose billions. If Mr Stamp really has a product that works he will be very rich very soon and it won’t be from selling his watches to those who want and need them.

This article post looks complete nonsense. Referring to Sam's comments above, there is already a Glucowatch device apparently on the market. (though where you can buy it from I am having real difficulty in determining). The Daily Mail recently (28/09/11) puplished an article on it (Search "Dail Mail Glucowatch") and I tried calling the number they detailed and it was not a recognised number.

I think articles like this simpy get peoples hopes up. This is purely a conceptual design which looks like it has copied the name and how it works from an existing product. (I'm assuming the existing name Glucowatch is already a registered trademark, so how could Christopher call his design by the same name).

Gadgets and Gizmos – since you were contacting the designer 15 weeks ago to check when it would be available, could you let us know the outcome of your contact. I suspect Christopher Stamp is a product designer that produces nice conceptual models and that his product doesn't actually existing, even in a working protype form. I would of course like to be proved wrong on this.

Hi. We are all still waiting. For those who prefer to keep a tighter control on their blood sugar numbers, this would be ideal.

I would love to buy something like this watch for my father, who is a type 1 diabetic, but only if it was reasonably priced (say around only $300.00) and would not have a requirement for additional test/sensor strips.

(I think the downfall of the original version "FDA approved biographer g2" was that it always needed pricy new sensor strips and therefore provided to be out of normal consumer price range.)

If the concept of bioimpedance glucose testing through sweat is practical, I would think that this style of watch could just use 3 or 4 small stainless steal tabs to conduct the measurement and get a close approximate reading. I'm guessing that most people (my father for example) who would use a watch-meter such as "Glucowatch" don't need it to be super accurate, just good enough to let them know if they are way near coma or way near passing out.
Then at that point they would need to do an actual finger prick and adjust their insulin/glucose.

Anyways, I'd like to see and/or buy this if it ever becomes real again. ((posted 5/11/2012))

This is a concept product I'm afraid. There's no sign from the designer that it will go into production at this stage.
