Google Doodle Celebrates Martha Graham’s 117th Birthday

Posted on May 11 2011 - 12:44am by Richard Sharp

Google has marked the 117th birthday of Martha Graham with a bespoke Google Doodle that has been animated by Ryan Woodward. When you initially visit the Google homepage you will be greeted by a blank screen, after a short pause the animation of a figure styled on Martha Graham (and her choreography) gracefully dances across the screen to create the word Google in swooping movements and turns.

About Martha Graham

Martha Graham is widely regarded as the mother of modern dance, her influence on dance is comparable to Picassos influence on art and her choreography, techniques and routines form the basis of many modern styles of dance. She started her long and distinguished career at a young age and when she passed away in 1991 at the age of 96 was still actively involved in various forms of choreography.

Expect today to be full of celebration and comments via the usual social networking channels; Twitter is already abuzz with famous quotes from Martha and her supporters over the years. Happy birthday Martha Graham and thank you for all your contributions to dance.

Do companies pay Google for these "doodles"? The value worldwide of increasing awareness of a brand, campaign and so on is massive.

Takes too long to load. Google is over using the doodle. I used to look forward to it because it happened so infrequently. Now it's like every couple of days. Stop it already.
