Google is paying tribute to one of the greatest musicians of our time, Freddie Mercury, with an animated Google Doodle celebrating his 65th birth anniversary.
Visitors to the homepage of Google will find an interactive Google Doodle that, when clicked, would play the 1978 Queen hit song Don’t Stop Me Now. The song is accompanied with a animated video that shows Mercury singing on stage, sitting on a throne wearing a crown, driving in space and cleaning a house dressed as a woman (from Queen’s ‘I Want to Break Free‘ music video), all in 16-bit goodness.
Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, wrote a special blog post on Google, saying, “Freddie would have been 65 this year, and even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever. Freddie made the last person at the back of the furthest stand in a stadium feel that he was connected. He gave people proof that a man could achieve his dreams.”
Ryan Germick, the designer of the doodle, added that “The video has a lot of fun, goofy stuff to celebrate what an incredible song writer, fashion icon, and musical innovator he was.”
History
Freddie Mercury, born on September 5, 1946 in Zanzibar, was a British musician, songwriter and singer, best known as the vocalist of the rock band Queen. He was known for his power vocal range of over four octaves and as a songwriter, he composed many hits, which include Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, We Are the Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Mercury died on November 24, 1991 due to bronchopneumonia, which was brought on by AIDS, a day after he announced he had the disease.
Mercury was regarded by top critics as one of the greatest singers of all time.
