iPhone 5 to be a “world phone,” reports say

As we draw closer to the release of the much-awaited iPhone 5 from Apple, an increasing number of speculations are surfacing. Now, tech website TechCrunch reports that the iPhone 5 will be a dual-mode phone, which means that it is capable of running on CDMA and GSM networks.

An anonymous developer obtained the information from iOS 5 beta logs that confirms the existence of a new iPhone that is capable of running CDMA and GSM networks.

A mobile phone that is capable of running on CDMA networks, such as Sprint and Verizon, and GSM networks, such as T-Mobile and AT&T, is called a “world phone” since it can be used in any country in the world.

For those who have been following the development of Apple’s current smartphone, the iPhone 4, remember that when the company released the device for mobile carrier Verizon, it used a chipset from Qualcomm. The phone had its GSM radio turned off, but it was still capable of running the network aside from CDMA. This seemed back then that the next-generation iPhone would be a dual-mode phone.

If this is indeed true, the company would no longer have to make two separate iPhones and could make a global one, which is better from a manufacturing standpoint. It would also make it easier for users who travel to places where only GSM or CDMA is available.
