If you’re a musician or a podcaster and you’re looking for a way to record audio using your iPhone or iPad, this new device could be right for you!

Created by IK Multimedia, who also made the iRig guitar interface, the iRig Mic is the first unidirectional condenser microphone for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Now, you can make professional voice and audio recordings using your iOS device.

The iRig Mic filters out background noise, which is good when you’re recording in a noisy environment. It has a three level sensitivity switch, which enables it to be used in a number of environments.

Connecting the iRig Mic is easy: you just connect the mic’s 1/8-inch jack to the iPhone’s headphone port. You can connect your headphones to use it as a monitor as well. The only downside is its thin cable. If IK Multimedia can make an iRig Mic that can be connected to the iPhone via standard XLR cables, then this device will be perfect.

The app can be used with VocaLive, which is a vocal processing app for the iPhone. The app includes 12 vocal effects, which can be arranged in 3 effect chains. VocaLive has a voice cancel feature that cancels out the vocal track of a song, so you can record your own voice, using your favorite mp3 as a backing track minus the original vocals.

The combination of the VocaLive voice processing software and the iRig mic makes it easy for a vocalist to make songs and podcasts. The iRig Mic is priced at $59.99, while the VocaLive is priced at $19.99. This is a bargain compared to buying a dedicated vocal processor that’s priced at $300-$600.

Does the iRig sound like a useful gadget to you?
