Is Jim Carrey Dead? Twitter Sets off another Hoax

Posted on Mar 2 2011 - 10:40pm by Matt Jackson

A Tweet has started wildfire rumours that the comic actor Jim Carrey is dead after a fatal snowboarding accident in Switzerland. Thankfully this has turned out to be a hoax much like other scandals in the past.

The Tweet says that the associated press has published a story about the Bruce Almighty actor; we could not find any stories detailing his untimely demise or indeed any news of an accident.

It seems as if this hoax is a similar thing to the Morgan Freeman tweet fest a couple of months back, at the time it was said CNN had published a story that he had been killed and it gathered so much traction on the micro blogging site that CNN had to issue a statement to deny it.

We have found plenty of stories about the up coming sequal to Dumb and Dumber which is cool but no link or search has shown up any bad news. Lots of Twitter users reported the same, one said “Let me google this jim carrey death cause ppl be lying just like they did morgan freeman !” Another “they lied about Jim Carrey? Wth! stupid people, why report that bullshit aha x”

So is Jim Carrey dead?

We highly doubt and sincerely hope not but this does show the power Twitter has to promote stories, even ones that are clearly untrue.

[singlepic id=254 w=320 h=240 float=right]Update: A link to a story has been sent to us which has been set up using a service called FakeAWish.com. This allows users to create stories, the footer says ” this story was dynamically generated using a generic ‘template’ and is not factual. Any reference to specific individuals has been 100% fabricated by web site visitors who have created fake stories by entering a name into a blank ‘non-specific’ template for the purpose of entertainment.”

We don’t think hoaxing a man’s death is entertaining, Fakeawish have yet to comment.

Update:

Carrey’s publicist confirms he is alive and well: “It’s absolutely not true,” she says. “This internet rumor is false.”

No because it says as much in the footer of that site. Quote”this story was dynamically generated using a generic 'template' and is not factual. Any reference to specific individuals has been 100% fabricated by web site visitors who have created fake stories by entering a name into a blank 'non-specific' template for the purpose of entertainment.”
