You may have noticed that today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the life and work of Jane Austen, born on 16th December 1775. Austen is known for a large variety of famous works including, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility and perhaps most of all for Pride and Prejudice.
Today’s Google Doodle depicts a country scene with two suitably dressed individuals, one lady and one Gentleman – probably Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. The Doodle pays homage to works that made Austen famous long after she passed away, when she was alive she would publish her stories anonymously and did not become famous until after she had died – a trait that many artists and writers have experienced before and after her works.
Many of her stories have been produced as films and have even provided writers with ideas of spin offs and new stories. For example Pride and Prejudice and Zombies uses the traditional tale with the addition of Zombies ambling across the countryside, we are not sure Jane Austen would approve but modern day readers certainly do as the book has already sold over 1 million copies.
What do you think of today’s Doodle? Have you read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?
