Activision Blizzard Inc. has announced that the newly released action shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had the biggest release of any game in history, confirming that the series is the company’s best-selling franchise.

The success of the game is very crucial for the game publisher, which has opted to launch fewer, better-quality game titles every year.

Modern Warfare 3, which was just released this week, got more than $400 million in sales on its first day in the United Kingdom and North America, breaking the world record.

The biggest holiday title of Activision Blizzard sold more than 6.5 million copies on its launch date, shattering last year’s record of 6.5 million copies or $360 million in sales. Last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops went on to get $1 billion in almost two months.

“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”

The game has also set a new record for the number of players online on Xbox Live at the same time, according to Xbox maker Microsoft.
