A weird new food gadget promises to transform our taste buds by making healthy food taste as good as all the lovely stuff that we know is bad for us.
The idea is known as Taste Buddy and it sounds pretty glorious. It is based on the concept that when you put it in your mouth it can alter the electric and thermal signals sent to your brain.
This could make spinach taste like chocolate and cucumber taste like, well, anything other cucumber hopefully. The gadget can handle both sweet and salty foods, so there is hope that it can turn that stodgy piece of broccoli into a yummy bar of chocolate.
It is hoped that future versions can be more comprehensive, so that it can be used to make drastic changes to our diets without forcing us to lose the tastes that we crave.
The man behind the Taste Buddy is Professor Adrian Cheok. He revealed that it started off as just a bit of fun but quickly turned into a more serious attempt to help people to eat more healthily.
Kids Hate Vegetables! Fact!
Cheok said that a lot of kids “hate the taste of vegetables”. He therefore came up with a plan to let them eat their greens but have them “taste like chocolate”. He even claims that it “could eventually save lives” by making it easier to eat more healthily.
Of course, not everyone is convinced that this type of gadget is really necessary. After all, there are plenty of people who enjoy the taste of healthy food as much or more as junk food.
The British public will be able to judge the Taste Buddy for themselves when it appears at the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair next year.
Do you think that this sort of good gadget is a good idea, or do you think that broccoli and spinach taste perfectly fine as it is?
