Not Long to Wait Now for the Ouya

We will find out soon how big an impact the Ouya will have on the games consoles market, won’t we? The device costs £65 and it is now getting delivered to the people who helped bring it to life, while everyone else can pre-order it now.

The Ouya runs on the Android operating system from Google and it promises to deliver games which cost a lot less than those which are currently available on rival consoles and more in line with the cost of games which can be bought for mobile phones and tablets.

A Lot of Backers Behind It

ouyaThe console was brought out thanks to financing from the crowd funding site at Kickstarter, with a total of £5.3 million in funding coming from over 63,000 backers. Those backers are now getting the device sent out to them.

While this is a revolutionary approach to the gaming market it won’t be alone for very long. A similar idea is behind the Android powered console which UK company Gamestick is working on. There is also a similar product expected from Nvidia, called Project Shield, while Valve is working on the Steambox console using the Steam network.

None of these other consoles are expected to match the low price of Ouya, though. It is a cuboid shaped box and you could have yours by the 4th of June, as this is the date is goes on release in the UK, Canada and the US.

One big issue is around the number and quality of the games on offer. No official word has come out on this crucial aspect yet and this is what could ultimately make or break it.
