Online retail site Amazon has started taking pre-orders from Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console. The retailer seemingly released the PlayStation Vita’s release date and its price in the United Kingdom.
Although the Amazon UK site did not give away any more release information aside from the device’s price, the US Amazon site stated that pre-orders will receive the new portable console on New Year’s Eve.
The PlayStation Vita is priced £279.99 for the Wi-Fi plus 3G version, while the Wi-Fi only model will save customers a lot, coming in at £229.99.
For those of you who are ordering the 3G-capable model of the device, Sony has not yet confirmed which mobile carrier in the UK will support the device. The information is not provided by Amazon too, so we’ll have to wait for an announcement soon. As for those living in the US, users who bought or are going to buy the 3G-capable model will have to sign up to a data agreement from AT&T. It will be the only carrier in the country that will support Vita.
The PlayStation Vita features a 5-inch AMOLED display with 960 x 544 resolution. It runs on a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and has a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4+ graphics processing unit, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. It has dual analog sticks, a multi-touch pad at the back and motion controls.
No release date has been announced for the UK, but we’re guessing that it will be similar to the US launch date.

The UK Amazon site started taking preorders back in June, immediately after Sony's press conference.
