The Sky News app for the iPhone and iPod touch has been a firm favourite for people seeking the latest updates, videos and even quirky stories since it launched on the app store. Many iPad users have been asking when they would get a dedicated app, well they’ll be asking no longer as it is now available to download from the app store.
Instead of simply plugging in stories from the iPhone app a new team will source, produce and then distribute the news via the native iPad app. The new format will include live coverage of events, analysis and expert opinions – the app basically provides a mobile version of the live Sky News channel. One neat trick is that live video can be rewound past the point the user entered the video; this is basically a neat variation of on-demand video.
The live and on-demand services seems to have gone down well with users as the app has shot to the top of the News category and the overall free category too.
Head of Sky News, John Ryley, said: “We pride ourselves on being an innovative, brave and mould-breaking news service, and work hard to give our audiences access to news on their terms.”
It seems Mr. Ryley agrees with iPad owners past demands and is clearly pleased with the new app. He continued “Having delivered content across digital, online and mobile, iPad was the next logical platform on which to break new ground.”
The app is currently available for free download but is hotly tipped to add subscription based premium content in the near future.
