Sony Roll Out PS3 Security Update

Sony has responded to recent security flaws by releasing an update for the Playstation 3, the update hasn’t made a big deal of this fact explaining that “a minor update that adds a security patch” comes as part of the newly updated 3.56 firmware.

The update brings no new features to the PS3, either visible or performance wise however owners will be forced to install the update if they want to access the Playstation Network, the Playstation store on play online games. The patch is a clear effort to plug holes in the firmware identified by prolific hacker Geohot.

If the update had come with some other trinkets people probably wouldn’t have batted an eye lid but that’s not the case on the blogosphere today.  The team over at Geeky Gadgets has speculated that Sony may begin rolling out a serial key security system in the near future similar to PC games meaning users would have to input the key before playing the game for the first time.

To every day gamers who purchase games either on a disk or via the official paths this will be no trouble, they will simply input the code and the console will remember it for future use. We suspect Sony want to try and kerb people who use unofficial firmware for copied or cracked games.

Do you think Sony will roll out a serial key system in the near future?

Will Sony try a serial key system in the near future? More than likely.. Will it work? No.

I remember back in the mid 90's (maybe before that) PC games would come with a key that you had to enter in before it would install on the hard drive. Witched worked if you never uninstalled the game, but if you did and lost your key you were screwed.. but you could always find a keygen online to get another key and the game would install like it was a real key. This will more than likely happen with PS3 games too.

They also had an idea that if it couldn't find the disk in the cd tray it wouldn't play the game.. But then again you could always find a no cd patch online.

I have also read this rumor on other sites who also stated that the key would be useable up to 5 times. If that is true how would it effect companies like Gamestop who make more than 1/2 of their profits off of used games?

What I think is Sony's best bet is to implement something like MS did with the 360 back when they did the blade to windows refresh. Now from what I understand MS has a code that can tell if any hardware/software has been modded from what it was originally, it sends back info to MS for a review and if they find that it has been modded the console is banned (this is just my understanding on it).

Right, update what you like but on my farm Internet this update has done 5% in 50minutes. I wanted a nice game if codpiece but mr Sony and his hopeless updates have spoilt tonights session. What you gonna hack, my username and email my imaginary psn friends? Who cares. Updates like this pointless stuff should be optional or at least have the option of delaying it till I've finished getting out my willy Petes.

My connection speed is 420kbps and there's 10 hours to go.
