The chief engineer of the insanely popular Playstation Move has decided to up the ante by proclaiming that the Microsoft XBOX Kinect is a system is ‘not quite up to spec”. All of this comes at the same time that Sony releases their sales figures so far – 4.1 million units apparently.
Anton Mikhailov revealed “We’re not necessarily against Kinect or against depth cameras, it’s just we feel like Move has more applicability across more genres so it fits better with what we try to do.”
He also boasted that their version of a light sabre game would be “damn better than Kinect’s.” And to be honest it probably would be due to the fact you actually have something to hold.
The claims came after Mikhailov claimed the Playstation Move could be made even more accurate, he said yesterday “We can certainly update it through firmware. The real question is do we want to? So far we haven’t had any real requests from studios to improve the accuracy. There are a couple of issues here and there we can fix, but the majority the games are not even taxing it to its full accuracy.”
The statement is perhaps a small dig at Microsoft, as was today’s sales update which fell conveniently close to the Kinect’s sales figures release. Going by today’s news and sales trends Sony will end the year with over 6 million units sold, where Microsoft would sell 5 million based on current sales. Obviously there is a long way to go and we are sure Kinect will counter in some way.
Have you bought or used either of the devices yet? What do you think?
