Sony Says Gran Turismo 5 will boost Playstation 3 Sales

Posted on Nov 29 2010 - 10:48pm by Richard Sharp

A couple of weeks ago we talked about Playstation 3 sales and whether the release of Gran Turismo 5 would help bolster sales on the run up to Christmas. Well it seems Sony believes that the launch of GT5 will drive PS3 sales.

David Wilson, Head of PR at Sony UK, Said Gran Turismo 5 “will serve as a true driver of new console purchases” following “one of the strongest years in recent memory”.

In an interview with MCV, Wilson revealed “2010 has been one of the strongest years in recent memory for quality game releases, and we have culminated the year with the launch of Gran Turismo 5.”

He continued “We are confident that Gran Turismo 5 will do great business between launch and Christmas.”

Gran Turismo 5 has had a mixed start managing chart topping sales despite glitches with data installation and the need for a patch that was released last Saturday. It’s still unknown when a fix for the intermittent bugs Signature owners are experiencing.

However, understandably the game is and will continue to be popular. Is it strong enough to sway people to buy a PS3? We will have to wait and see.

Do you think GT5 will help increase Playstation 3 sales this Christmas?

"Gran Turismo 5 has had a mixed start managing chart topping sales despite glitches with data installation and the need for a patch that was released last Saturday"

Why are people fussing about a patch that takes about a minute to download. What glitches are there with the data installation?

Mixed start?, how?, the only glitches were online,if you call server overload a "glitch" and data installation is optional not mandatory.

This article has stealth troll all over it, sway people to buy a PS3?,are you trying to imply no one wants one?,despite the console about to enter second place in world wide sales.

Check amazon for proof of the huge boost in sales this game did for the PS3 already, not to mention today it just hit number 1 in the UK overtaking COD Black ops.

GT5 is the king of racing sims and has rightfully so taken back the crown, next time be realistic and a little less on the shadow bias.

    Cheers.

GT5 will definitely 'drive' (no pun intended) PS3 sales. I know of a few people who have just bought PS3s just for GT5. They can't be the only ones. They had PS2s to begin with so GT5 was the catalyst that made them finally buy a PS3. I think that will happen a LOT over the Christmas period! I'm not sure if Xbox owners will be swayed because they have such a wonderful game already in Forza 3! Yes, I have played it. It's good, but I don't think it quite matches the GT series!

I'm buying my first ps3 next week, I've been waiting for GT5 to come out, I didn't really see the point of owning one without being able to play GT on it. In fact i think one of Sony's mistakes with the PS3 was to delay it for so long. It should have been a launch title. GT is a PlayStation institution, like Nintendo and Mario. I have no doubt that this game will have a significant impact on PS3 sales.

Seriously this game has been hyped way too much.

I was in JB Hi Fi and saw the game on a Sony HD TV and I was confused because the graphics where…OK. – just OK. Nothing to write home about. GT5 certainly does not look anything like the video clips released over the past few years. A few other people stopped and looked and had the same reaction…"thats GT5 – really?" Meh.

It probably would have been considered 'Wow!' if it was released a half of a decade ago.

If Sony were smart, they would start developing GT6 now for their next console and have it ready as a launch title.

I know several people buying a PS3 JUST for GT5. Don't listen to the reviews where they spend 5 minutes reviewing it, it's a fantastic game. Damage and AI don't ramp up til level 20, most reviewers clearly didn't get this far with the game…

    @Peter Sakes

I suggest selling your Xbox, your fanboyism is too great. GT5 looks and plays fantastic. No doubt about it whatsoever, it's a whole generation ahead of other racers like Forza.

It's just a shame it seems to have been reviewed with a different yardstick to all other games.
