The RED Scarlet and the Fujifilm FinePix X100

If you are looking for a top camera to let you take professional pictures and videos then the new tiny 2/3” RED Scarlet which has been on show here at the CES 2011 is bound to interest you.

The touchscreen monitor and the wireless remote control are the two features which are attracting most attention but we should be careful not to let these things fool us into thinking that this is a camera for beginners. One look at the specs tells us that this is not the case and that those looking for a basic camcorder should look elsewhere.

There is a fixed lens and it captures with a resolution of 3K and with a speed of 120 RAW frames per second. You can capture to a CF card or to a SSD module.

Of course, two of the things that most interest us – the release date and the price – are yet to be made known. RED is a company which is known to take its time over its releases, and the specs list means that it is pretty sure to carry a hefty price tag.

One camera on show here which does have an estimated price on its head – between $1,000 and $1,200 – is the Fujifilm FinePix X100. This model, which the company say is the first compact camera to give exceptional photos to both experts and not so experts, has 12 mega pixels, a big Hybrid Viewfinder, EVF and a 23mm fixed lens. It can also be used to capture HD movies. This one should be out at the start of next month, at least in the States.

These both look like great machines, and the one you choose will probably come down to how comfortable you feel with them when you get your hands on them. Can you wait until you get the chance?
