Forbes has just released its list of 400 wealthiest people in the United States today, and while Microsoft founder and former CEO Bill Gates is still at the top, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg surprised the pack by jumping 21 places to the top 14 spot.
Despite giving lots of his stuff away, Bill Gates is still the wealthiest man in the US. He even has more money than he did last year. The list puts his net worth at $59 billion, with a $5 billion increase from last year’s figures. That’s not surprising at all. The biggest winner in the list is Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, who, at 27 years of age, is the 14th richest in the US, up from 35 last year.
Zuckerberg’s net worth is listed at $15.5 billion, putting him ahead of Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who are both placed in the 15th spot with their net worth listed at $16.7 billion. In 2009, Zuckerberg was not even included in the Forbes 400.
It’s not surprising to see the top spots being held by popular people in tech. Other names who made the list are Amazon’s chief executive officer Jeff Bezos, who came in at 13th place, just ahead of Zuckerberg, Brin and Page, with 19.1 billion, and the current head of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, who is in 19th place. Surprisingly, Steve Jobs came in at 39th place with a net worth of $7 billion.
Michael Dell, who is worth $15 billion, comes in at 18th place, and at Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, whose net worth is estimated at $13.2 billion, takes the 23rd spot.
