Apple iPhone 5 could feature new Camera with Dual-Flash

A couple of months ago Sony leaked that they are supplying camera sensors to Apple, since then it has been assumed that the Apple iPhone 5 will come equipped with a high end 8MP camera. A new rumour has now emerged about the iPhone 5 camera flash, which if correct would mean a dual-led flash on the rear of Apple’s new flagship phone.

The news comes from Apple Insider, a Taiwanese source has revealed that Apple are sourcing both camera components and led flash parts from new suppliers which currently both come from Philips. IT Pro portal posted a link from which seemed to support this theory, on the site a photo seems to show a new type of camera sensor which does not have a flash built-in.

The general feeling is Apple will opt for a dual-flash, with two LED units situated a few mm apart on the rear of the iPhone 5. This has been a new feature of a number of compact cameras and is designed to give a wider coverage of light.

Adding more components to the iPhone 5 will mean an additional cost to Apple, currently the iPhone 4 camera unit costs $10 per piece. The new dual-flash unit will cost an extra $2, which doesn’t sound like much but soon mounts up when they start purchasing millions of them (we guess a discount will be applied though).

Apple likes to offer new things, and by adding a new type of camera flash it would give them the edge over competitors. In a market which is constantly changing this is important, as having something unique for a few weeks or months can mean you own the market as other play catch up.

Do you think Apple needs to improve the iPhone 5’s camera and flash?

Regarding introducing the updated camera on Apple iphone 5, one can only say that it is nothing more than a publicity stunt because it goes with all Apple products. They intentionally leak out rumors which later benefits them when the actual sales take place.
