Finally it has arrived, or will do by the day is out. Apple has announced that iOS will release to the general public today bringing multitasking, app management and over 100 more updates to the iPad. iPhone and iPod owners will also benefit from some interesting additions and more importantly some bug fixes.
iOS 4.2 will be available from within iTunes later today (I’d put my money on 6pm GMT) bringing the iPad bang up to date with the iPhone 4. This will include 100 new additions, notably AirPlay, AirPrint, Multiple email account management, the Game centre as well as improvements to Wi-Fi and 3G signals.
The newly integrated AirPrint will allow iPad and iPhone owners to print directly to any AirPrint wireless printer. For the first time iPad owners will be able to stream Apple TV via AirPlay, renting movies on demand with a 48 hour window once viewing has started.
iPhone owners will also get the free ‘find my phone’ feature which was previously a paid MobileMe function. An extra 25 optional languages will also be included in the update.
“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”
