People all over the world have gone crazy for Apple products. There’s one story about a Chinese girl who offered her virginity for an iPhone 4, and a guy who sold a kidney to buy an iPad 2. An enterprising Chinese man came up with a solution for iPad fans who desperately wants to have the popular Apple tablet but cannot afford it. His answer? DIY.

In a video posted on Youku, the Chinese version of Youtube, Liu Xinying, an engineer from Jinan City in China, demonstrated how to make your own tablet using spare computer parts, a touch screen and a case with a keypad.

In just two weeks, Liu patched together old computer parts with a touch screen, which he branded with an Apple logo. In his 20-minute video, he demonstrated how his “homemade iPad 3” works, reading an ebook, browsing websites, and using Google Earth. His DIY tablet runs on Windows XP.

“I did this for fun,” said Liu, who currently works at a computer store. “It cost me 2000 yuan (£179) to make it, so I guess that’s how much it’s worth.”

The cheapest model of the iPad 2 is sold for 3688 yuan, while the most expensive version costs 5288 yuan.

Apple’s iPhones and iPads are very popular in China, which is the largest internet market in the world with 457 million internet users. The launch of new Apple models has been known to trigger violence in the country.
