Warner Brothers are continuing to lead the way on social and mobile movie rentals as they increase their rental list on Facebook to include an additional five blockbuster films. Granted that’s not quite the same as your local Blockbuster or Lovefilm but it does show they are willing to engage with an ever growing social fan base in untraditional ways.
Thomas Gewecks, President of Warner Brothers pictures explained, “These titles have substantial followings on Facebook. The Fan Pages for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Inception’ alone are two of the most popular and active communities on the site.”
Titles will include Harry Potter and the philosophers stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Inception and Yogi Bear to accompany the previously available Dark Knight Batman title.
At this stage the service is only available in the US where Facebook users can rent the films on demand through their official fan page. They cost between 30-40 Facebook credits which equates to around $3-$4 dollars.
You may also recall that Warner Brothers also recently launched dedicated apps for The Dark Knight and Inception which follows along the same theme of engaging movie buffs on multiple and more mobile platforms.
This ties in with another of Gewecks statements, ‘Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.’
Do you think Warner Brothers digital marketing plans are a good idea?
