So what’s special about Saturday 19th February 2011? Well it’s the 135th birthday of Constantin Brancusi of course and like many great figures from history he has become the latest to receive Google’s top honour – his very own Google Doodle.
The Constantin Brancusi Doodle
Today’s Doodle showcases some of the different sculptures Brancusi created, as a fitting tribute they have made sure to include a variety of materials to reflect the character and work he performed. There are works in stone, bronze, wood and stone – all of which make up the letters G-O-O-G-L-E. The Doodle includes the Promethues bound, Sleeping Muse, Mademoiselle Pogany,Bird in Space and The Kiss.
About Constantin Brancusi
Originally Brancusi was a carpenter and was also trained as a stonemason, in 1904 he settled in Paris where he picked up influences from African and Oriental art work. Rodin also had early influence over Brancusi although Brancusi wanted to simplify his work, an idea that is reflected as his sculptures became more polished as his career continued. That said he worked with smooth sculptures in bronze, marble and in stark contrast rough wood and stone. In his twilight years Brancusi polished his early work to bring smoothness and shine to them, his work is described as modern and he is considered a master of his craft.
Happy birthday Constantin Brancusi. Which is your favourite sculpture?
I like the one in the middle, like a head. I also think this doodle is quite nice
Great artist, also known by his contemporaries as the Saint of Montparnasse for his late-life ascetic habits

Friend of Pablo Picasso he brought to sculpture what he self described as:
"Don’t look for mysteries; I bring you pure joy."
Congrats GOOGLE for bringing him up

My favourite sculpture is Ms. Pogany.
