HTC Desire and Desire HD Receives Update – Not Gingerbread

Posted on Dec 25 2010 - 12:01am by Richard Sharp

HTC raised the hopes of HTC Desire and Desire HD owners today, an official Tweet read “European Desire HD/Desire Z users – look out for an update rolling out from today that will make your mobile experience even better”.

Users probably thought they were going to receive the box fresh Android Gingerbread update – sadly this wasn’t the case.

After realizing their Christmas Eve gaff HTC issued another Tweet dashing the hopes of owners: “To clarify, the Desire Z/Desire HD update is a maintenance build based on all your feedback. Gingerbread is not a part of this update”.

So HTC giveth, HTC taketh away – however the update will bring an improved switching process for home screens. Users will also benefit from an updated call screen which allows users to put calls on hold, view contacts whilst on the phone and add new calls.

Google officially rolled out Android 2.3 Gingerbread earlier this month launching the brand new Nexus S Smartphone. No other phone has received the update and it looks like HTC Desire owners will have to keep on waiting.

It may not be the 2.3 update, but before I installed it, my desire hd was quite laggy between apps etc. But now the application is installed, my phone is running like a dream.

Hoping this fixes the signal issue, and possibly battery life, those are the only issues I have with this phone really

I patiently waited months for this phone, being an orbit 2 owner from o2. Even shunning the IPhone 4. Being self employed my phone needs to last 16 hours a day between charges. I paid £500 for the Desire hd from carphone warehouse as at the time of writing o2 does not stock this phone so decided to buy it. The phone is really quite good apart from 2 major flaws. The first being the volume of ringer and in call is pretty poor. Secondly the battery life is atrocious and intermittent sometimes it lasts 20 hours sometimes 8 hours. Why the hell did HTC not fit a shutdown menu for programmes you want to stop running in the background like the orbit2 and Xda. I am seriously thinking of cutting my losses and switching to an IPhone 4. Software updates badly needed to put these problems right, sooner rather than later. Come on Htc sort yourself out or your close to losing another long term customer.

Glenn Adams – You really are stupid for thinking that HTC give a crap, you'be handed over your 500 notes, that's all they ever wanted!

As far as the shutdown running apps goes, use the manage applications app that is installed on your phone! 🙂

Gutted this isn't gingerbread by the way 🙁

I installed the update, and the changes is mostly better performance. Before the update I noticed a lot of lag, but now it seems like the phone is running like a dream!

Also it might look like my battery life has gone up, not much but just a little bit, better than nothing if you ask me 🙂

And for Glenn Adams: If you want to manage applications install Advanced Task Killer (free version is available), it works like a dream to me 🙂

advanced task killer wont make a difference as android dosent work in that way background apps use no power what so ever turning off sync, Bluetooth,l and wifi turning down the screen brightness is the best way to save power or just buy a spear battery

Does anyone have experience of upgrading (up sizing) the memory card in their HTC Desire. I'm thinking of doing this to hold a few albums but would hate to "upset" anything else on what is an excellent phone.

    Thanks & Seasons Greetings

    Mike,

I put a robust Samsung shock, X-ray and water proof card in my desire, its a class 6, the original card is only class 2 class 6 is 3x quick and this is noticeable when recording 720p video, it fixes the choppy issue!

It's 8 gig, more than enough for me, I bought it for 2 main reasons 1 my original cards was giving errors, hence me getting a robust card and 2 I want to record 720p video with it being choppy, I'd well recommend my card, it was really cheap too, can't remember how much now. Got it from mymemory .co.UK I think, they are really good if u live in UK. Hope this helps,

    Oliver

how do you get this update…i have tried through my phone and it says there are no updates available

  10. Oliver December 28, 2010 at 2:33 pm - Reply

I got this update ota but I have a unbranded phone. Branded phones will get the update later after the network reinstall bloatware. Assuming the network even bothers to offer you the update. Debranding could be the best option but this would probably invalidate your warranty. Mobile insurance should still be valid though, do some research first.

Got the update and it has made the phone a lot less laggy and i've noticed a slight (very slight) increase in battery performance but now i'm having serious issues with SMS messages. Notifications for new texts seem to have stopped and i have to physically open the messaging app to see any new texts…..anyone else having similar problems?

Got my update yesterday but within a few hours my phone started saying sd card is unavailable. Not impressed.

Daz – I emailed HTC about it. Loads of people on other forums seem to be having the same problem. HTC told me to do a hard reset (back up first!) Which I've yet to try. Am using chomp sms until I do.
