An inventory leak from US mobile carrier AT&T may have revealed a listing for a white version of an iPhone 4S, not the iPhone 5, which is being expected by many. Rumors suggest that the new iPhone 4S is a smaller cheaper smartphone, enabling Apple to reach new markets and a wider audience.

A tipster sent tech website Engadget a screenshot of the mobile carrier’s internal system, with the “iPhone 4s” included with other iPhone models, such as the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3G. The listing, however, appears to be incomplete as it does not include the smartphone’s storage capacity, just its color.

It is worth noting that the “s” is not capitalized, unlike the “G” in the iPhone 3G,” which suggest that the listing could be a fake, or it is simple a mistake. The leaked photo fueled speculations that the company will release an iPhone 4S in October, alongside the iPhone 5.

The name “iPhone 4S” has been widely used by the media to refer to an upgrade to Apple’s current smartphone, the iPhone 4, which is very similar to the difference between previous iPhones, the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Some previous reports suggest that the iPhone 5, which is more powerful than the iPhone 4, will be released with the 4S version.

Apple has not yet announced a press event for this week, and the company did not release an iOS 5 beta 8, which was expected to be released last Friday. It was rumored that the company will launch the iOS 5 Gold Master on Friday, September 23.
