Rockstar Games has announced that the third installment of the Max Payne series will be released in March 2012, with the game franchise getting its first smartphone remake and its first ever multiplayer mode. Max Payne 3 will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.

No specific release date yet has been announced, but at least it ends speculations that the game won’t be released until its developers and publishers decide whether or not to release it in April or May. It was originally planned to be launched in 2009 and has been delayed three times. Now, we can get hold of the game in 2012.

“Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to evolve one of our most iconic characters,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser in a statement. “We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.”

In Max Payne 3, the New York City detective is in Sao Paulo, Brazil, working as a private security for an industrialist and his family. His new job goes awry when gangs stats targeting the family, which forces Max to save them.

The multiplayer mode of Max Payne 3 delivers an exciting experience that alters maps used in the single-player campaign. It will include a deep reward and a leveling system, strategic load-out options and players will have the ability to join clans.
