Activision Blizzard’s latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game has surpassed the $1 billion sales mark in just 16 days, a record-breaking feat, according to the publisher on Monday.
The first person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was launched worldwide on November 8th, blowing away opening-day sales records. It sold 6.5 million units on its debut day, racking up $400 million in sales.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke the record set by the 2009’s popular 3D film Avatar by just one day. Activision Blizzard would not reveal the number of copies sold, but experts estimated it at around 16 million.
“Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre,” said Eric Hirshberg, Activision Publishing’s chief executive officer, in a release. “Every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty.”
Modern Warfare 3 easily surpassed its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, which took 42 days to reach the billion dollar sales mark after its November 2010 release.
The game’s Hollywood level production, comedic TV ads (starring Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington) and its high-level online play helped pull new gamers to the franchise.
The game, which was developed by Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward, continues the storyline of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and segues into the third world war.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
