It’s that time again, when we catch up with the latest next gen console sales figures from around the globe. Despite a few analysts trying to get us excited over a potential contender to the Wii throne, the reality is that Nintendo’s machine is still far outshining its competitors.
In Japan (where Microsoft typically does badly), the Wii outsold the PS3 by almost 2 to 1 in the month of June, but in May the PS3 gave the Wii a serious run outselling it by 6 to 1. While the figures are hardly anything new, it does represent a serious improvement although sales figures are believed to have increased because of the release and, earlier, the impending release of Metal Gear Solid 4.
Sony has now sold nearly 13 million consoles around the world, and this figure is believed to have been the saviour behind the Blu-Ray drive. The PS3 certainly helped to beat HD DVD into submission and the fact that the Sony games console still represents the most affordable and realistic entry point into the Blu Ray market has been pretty much the only shining light in what has so far been a fairly dim new technology.
