If you are missing the Other OS which allowed the PlayStation 3 to run other operating systems such as Linux then you are in luck.
The Other OS came with the early PS3 models and achieved a relative degree of success among users before Sony ditched it from newer models and released a software update to wipe it from older ones too.
This caused a bit of grief with some users in the PS world, and some of the most well known hackers vowed to find a way round this. And now they have done it.
The people who have returned Linux toPS3 users are from Gitbrew.org and they have produced an Other OS++ which hackers say is even better than the official Sony OS. It works on just about all PS3 models and also gets to access all of the machine’s hardware.
The download is a bit on the heavy side and you will need to check that your console is compatible but if the official removal of this feature irked you then now is your chance to get it back.
This isn’t the only hack which gets the Linux back into your life, as there are other ones out there, but the big question is how many people will actually use it. There was a fairly extensive amount of internet clamouring for Sony to bring this back after they removed it, but if you use your PS3 for games and your PC for programming you may just wonder what all the fuss was about anyway.
Would you hack your PS3 to use Linux?
I have not upgraded my firmware because I have Linux installed.. and upgrading will not only deny me access to Linux… but it will create an unusable dead area on my PS3 hard disk where Linux is installed. I have been considering installing the firmware for this reason.
"Would you hack your PS3 to use Linux?" What a silly question !
Linux on PS3 is unlimited power : you can do any thing. I could use firefox on my TV and watch Youtube : cool !
