Rockstar Games, makers of the highly successful Grand Theft Auto game franchise, has officially announced the newest addition to the series, Grand Theft Auto V. The company did not divulge anything about the latest offering; they simply released the logo and a promise of a trailer that will be released next week, on November 2.

Rockstar Games will unveil the game’s first footage days after the release of Battlefield 3, one of the most anticipated shooters this year, and six days before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ships on November 8.

The game’s setting and release date have not yet been released. The Guardian reported that Grand Theft Auto V may be released on the next generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and might not be released this early. However, the game has been in development for at least two years, meaning that it could be launched in 2012.

Grand Theft Auto was originally developed as a top-down open-world game for the PlayStation and PC by DMA Design in 1997. The series made a breakthrough release with Grand Theft Auto III for the PlayStation 2, popularizing the open-world template.

Grand Theft Auto IV, which was released in 2008, became the fastest-selling game in the UK at that time. Rockstar then launched open-world games, such as the Western-themed Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire.

Earlier this month, Rockstar celebrated the Grand Theft Auto III’s tenth anniversary with the launch of an iOS compatible version of the game.
