Samsung unveils its rugged Galaxy Xcover smartphone

Samsung has unveiled a new addition to its Galaxy line of smartphones called the Samsung Galaxy Xcover.

The Galaxy Xcover is a mobile phone that runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with an IP67 standard certification, which means that it is fully water and dust resistant. The device is also shock resistant so it can withstand the force of impact from accidental dropping. It features a 3.6-inch capacitive touch screen, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connection, and a 3.2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash (which can also be used as a flashlight) and a VGA front camera. It also has 150 MB of built-in memory, a micro SD card slot and GPS.

The Samsung Galaxy Xcover will give similar rugged smartphones, such as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active and Motorola Defy a run for their money. The Xcover is said to be able to withstand 30 minutes of being under water (1 meter).

The phone may not have the highest specs when compared to other Android devices, but for the extreme user, it will come in handy in emergency situations. Running on Google’s Android OS, this device gives all the advantage of a smartphone to a rugged device that can withstand a lot of beating.

While the UK release and the pricing of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover has yet to be announced, the smartphone has been slated for an October release in Germany.
