Have you been sleeping well lately? If you haven’t then maybe you need a new lamp.

Does that sound like too simplistic an approach? Well, this isn’t any old beside lamp we are talking about. Oh no, this is a smart lamp. One that changes colour while you sleep.

The smart sleep system called Aura was revealed by Withings in the run up to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Three Different Parts to the System

There are essentially 3 different elements involved in the system. First of all, there is a padded sensor which is placed under the user’s mattress. This then gathers data such as their breathing rate, their heart rate and any movements they make in the bed.

The second part of the system is a gadget that goes next to the bed and assesses things like the temperature, the light and the noise. Part of this element is a lamp which changes colour depending upon the overall situation in the room, while it also contains a clock and a speaker.

Finally, there is a smart phone app which controls everything and gives feedback about how well the user slept.

With this in mind, the lamp uses all the information being gathered by the rest of the sleep system to switch between blue, yellow and red during the night. This means that it can change colour to either help you sleep more or to help you wake up in the best possible way. It is expected to cost £180 when released.

Would you try a system like this to try to get a better night’s sleep?
