The games console battle between Sony and Nintendo took a new twist in the last couple of days with a top boss at Sony laying into the image presented by the Nintendo 3DS.
Jack Tretton is President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America but there were no board room subtleties about the way he got stuck into his Fortune interview. He said that “no self respecting twenty something” would want to be seen sitting on an airplane with the 3DS and even went so far as to call it a “babysitting tool”.
These comments follow the general line which Sony has taken in the past of talking down products from their rival as being weak and aimed at younger players rather than their more powerful and sophisticated models.
The Sony bigwig likened the current Nintendo DS machines to the experience provided by the gone but not forgotten Game Boy. He then turned his attention to the Wii and questioned who on Earth would want to buy a gaming system with no hard drive in it, asking, “How does that thing scale?”
The Wii has of course been massively successful across the world but the point Tretton was making was the perceived longetivity which his company’s product achieve in the face of those from their rival.
Nonetheless, it remains to be seen how well his comments go down with the legions of more mature gamers who are delighted with their 3DS and have no worries about playing it in public.
When speaking of the Sony products he stated that the company’s bosses and designers look at “every technology out there” to give it a complete gaming experience.
Do you have a preference between Sony and Nintendo? Would you be ashamed to use a 3DS on a plane?

Im not going to listen to anything Sony says to do with the handheld market.
Actually very harsh, and rather stupid for of sony to say this about the 3DS. The 3DS has a brand new feature that the PS3 doesn't have "3D Without Glasses" I think its obvious that sony are getting a little jealous of the console because they no Nintendo have not yet pushed the barriers, and sony have with there old PSP. It scares them that by the time there codenamed "NGP" comes out it won't have the 3D intergration and won't be able to push the barres that Nintendo can. I have both a 3DS and PSP, and now i feel the PSP of been a bit of a "useless bit of kit"
I honestly think that it is quite immature of the Sony exec to make these kind if comments. They slated the motion controls of the Wii years back and now they have an (almost) exact replica. They claim that people want Graphics! and Power!… The PSP had much higher specs than the Original DS, but that still didnt stop the DS from claiming the handheld market, and the same will happen again. Maybe Sony should stop thinking of how to make their products appear Cool, Hardcore or Adult… and maybe just make them fun?
AHAHA Sony's garbage. They just hate on anything that sells more than them. I remember when they were jabbing the Wii and said they'd never do anything similar to it. Fast forward 5 years later they have the same thing except it looks more like a dildo. And finally , Sony define "Gamer"? Is it a person who plays games that last around for 1 year then theres a shitty follow up sequel? Or a person who can actually sit down enjoy a game and reminisce with characters that they played with 10-20 years ago. (Link , Mario , Star Fox , Kirby) to me I think a person whipping out a 3DS on a plane is more "respectable" than a person raging about dying in some shitty FPS game.
It's comments like these that puts me off buying Sony products. So, yeah, no sony for me. And this extends beyond gaming devices. I also put off buying Blu-Ray players or any of those 3D tvs that are offered by Sony and their cronies. Continue like this and pretty soon Sony will realize that they have no one left willing to buy their products. Way to go, Sony.
