Who is your favourite Italian plumber? Our guess is that it is a little chap with a moustache who goes by the name of Mario.

If it is has been a while since you played one of his games then you will be delighted to see that it looks as though the Super Mario 3DS game is going to come out this year.

The man behind the game is called Shigeru Miyammoto, and he has been quoted online as saying that the “completely original” game will be on its way “this year”. He added that it the gameplay is going to be a mix of the Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario games from the Nintendo 64 format.

Since the game first appeared in 1983 (yes, that long ago) it has spawned a lot of official and unofficial follow ups and spin offs, but hard core fans will be anxious to see how playing the game in 3D mode helps improve the action and lets them judge the distances even better.

If that wasn’t enough Mario news then we can also reveal that the Wii and the Nintendo 3DS will be getting a new game called Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The game involves…ah, the title pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? All we can add is that you can expect running, jumping, football, table tennis and lots of other sports based fun.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June of this year is expected to carry more details and possibly even the chance to have a shot at the games.

Will you be buying the 3D Mario game?
