It is always good to see technology being used to fight crime, and that is exactly what is being done in India right now.

The country was shocked by a recent brutal rape case and an aeronautical engineering student called Manisha Mohan decided to take action. Using her technical knowledge she and friends Rimpi Tripathi and Niladhri Basu Bal came up with a solution which should help to protect women in the future.

The solution comes in the form of a bra which gives out an electric shock of 38000kv to anyone who grabs it. This amount of voltage would be enough to give a serious burn to anyone you tried to attack someone who was wearing one.

A Shock and a Text Message

It is called the SHE, which stands for Society Harnessing Equipment and as well as giving a powerful shock to would be assailants it also sends a text message to a friend and to the nearest police station, and this message would include the GPS coordinates of the location where the incident took place.

Of course, the wearer of the SHE bra is protected against inadvertent shocks, in the form of a bi-layer fabric. The shock is triggered when a pressure sensor is touched, with different values being put in place for grabs, squeezes and pinches, while a hug won’t set it off. The wearer can also activate it herself if she feels threatened.

It may sound like a bit of a weird invention but if it helps make women safer on the street then it t will be one of the year’s most useful and most welcome gadgets.
