The Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts are set to show us who the most popular songs and artists on social media are at any given time.
The lists will be made up based on data from Twitter which shows the amount of traffic for each artist and song. Billboard will be working with Twitter to collate the information necessary to work out the popularity of each artist on a real-time basis.
At the moment, the artist with most Twitter followers is Katy Perry, with 51.8 million people currently following her. As well as those established artists who already have a huge amount of followers – people such as Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber – there will also be a focus on the new artists who are making waves on the internet.
Everyone Will Be Able to See the Buzz Being Created
Bob Moczydlowsky is the head of music at Twitter and he said that when an artist engages with their fans on Twitter or shares a song the “buzz they create” will be visible to the public as well as to those who work in the music industry.
The real time Twitter charts will be launched in the US in the next couple of weeks. Of course, in recent times the traditional Billboard Hot 100 chart has been modified to include YouTube and Spotify streaming figures as well as sales and radio play.
