Xbox 360 Kinect Sales Fail to Impact PS3, Move and Wii

Posted on Nov 21 2010 - 5:31pm by Richard Sharp

It seems that the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops and the Xbox 360 Kinect has made little impact on Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii console sales this week, despite a huge increase in the number of people buying Microsoft’s movement based controller.

In fact the week before Kinect’s release the Nintendo Wii outsold the Xbox 360, this trend reversed when the Kinect launched. However even though they sold less units than the Xbox this week Nintendo managed to rack up sales equal to previous weeks. The PS3 enjoyed a similar trend by keeping sales of their console and new Playstation move device constant.

This constant trend set by Sony could receive a big boost this week as they release the hotly anticipated Gran Turismo 5. Sony has launched a bundled version of their console to entice gamers with their Flagship racing game.

Do you think Sony’s sales will increase this week?

Note: The Playstation 3 slim bundle is available for £274.99

GT5 is the most realistic driving sim for consoles, Forza 3 was ok but sucks when compared to GT5; only 3 Days to GO !!!! xD

GT5, no I don't think it will sell hardware, the damage is poor and the cockpit view is LIMITED to a certain amount of cars( less than Forza) and all the other cars are just cars bought over from the previous GT games.

WHY NO DEMO ?, WHY NO REVIEWS when it's so close to release?.

I think your headline is fairly misleading the 360 had plenty of impact on the PS3 and the Wii.

As for Move, Kinect sold about a million more in the same space of time, Move may be cheaper but people can see all it's hidden costs it has just like the Wii especially when you want to have 2 players it get's expensive, whereas Kinect does it all straight out of the box and comes with a full game…

The damage isn't poor when considering the fact that you should be avoid collisions and not being a pr1ck and crashing into everyone like a 5 year old. The cockpit view might be limited to a certain number of cars but have you seen the detail of the cars that have it, think how long it would've taken to put that amount of detail on every single one of the 1031 cars (more than double what Forza had, I'd just like to point out)…those cars are awesome that's why they've been brought over.

Do CoD games have demos? No, because PD know it WILL sell hardware just like Activision etc. know CoD WILL sell!!!!

Your comment is the typical comment of an xbox fanboi. I do know that where I live everystore has a bunch of the xbox kinect in stock but none of them seem to have the move in stock. I do know why you say there are hidden costs because that woud like saying that when you buy a games console it has hidden costs because it only comes with one controler and in the past they even did not include a gsme so anybody with any intellegence would know that you would need buy two move or wiimotes to be able to play 2 players. I will tell what was hidden was the space requirment that kinect needs and also the fact that if you are using your xbox wirelessly you will have to buy a usb hub otherwise the kinect will have to be plugged into the front usb port which this only happens on the older 360's and one more thing that might be hidden is if you have the older 360 and you buy the kinect bundled in with the new 360s you will need to buy a power cord for kinect to be able to used on the older 360 but wait Microsoft does not even make a power cord for resale, the power cord is only available with the purchase of standalone kinect so when you want start talking about hidden fees please be aware that the 360 is not petfect and that all consoles do it because it is all about the money.

I agree with the hidden charges thing. My PS3 hidden charges in it's history included an extra controller (£30). My 360 hidden charges included extra controller (£30), battery charger (£15), 3 years on line (£120), initial super long Internet cable (£15), wifi connection (£60).

I certainly learnt my lesson this generation!

    Can't wait for GT5!

Hidden costs for Kinect are ridiculous. Russ put it nicely. Kinect sales should be jugded a year from now, once the hype is over, so we can see how consistently it delivers. Same with Move. Adding a free game with Kinect doesnt make the price tag more reasonable. You're still going to have to buy more games on top of that, and how good are their games? With Move, you buy it (it costs as much as a game) and if you dont like it, oh well. But $150 Kinect!? You better make sure you love it!

To get Move to play PROPERLY as it should be played you need the navi controller as well as a game, two players also require two of these and another controller plus a game and of course the Move kit to start with.

No one can argue that Move is any cheaper than Kinect because anyone who has it and plays it properly with two players knows what I mean, I have one and the cost adds up to about the same as Kinect no doubt,

And as for space eh what ? I have Sports champions and I need around 8 feet to play that properly even the devs and the box tell you that.

Announced Move games I am not really impressed with so far it's all just ADDONS for old titles and next release in a series i.e Killzone"3" with Move addon.

Announced Kinect games include 5 core titles from the best Japenese legendry gamemakers, NOT ADDONS but BRAND NEW GAMES.

Big whoop, the hidden cost of buying the Move wand with Nav twice is still cheaper than buying Kinect and the better peripheral. So let us not go there shall we…

Anyone who's still banging on about the "hidden costs" of move obviously hasn't played it. I'm getting along fine with my £40 starter pack. Since move is quite a social thing anyway, any time I fancy trying out the move advanced stuff i just invite my mates over and get them to bring their controllers, ya know, like they're normal controllers.

    It's the quivalent of going:

OMG TO PLAY XBOX N PS3 PROPERLY YOU NEED 4 CONTROLLERS. RIP OFF.

Most party based games are turn based anyway.

I've not played kinect, so I don't know what it's like, but move is sweet. It's easy enough to jump into and is surprisingly accurate for the price, so actual talent is rewarded, unlike the wii.

Just been phoning all my local ASDA's as I'm after a Move controller, and all 5 are sold out!! They have no idea when the next lot arrive because of the demand, so I asked how many Kinect have you sold? '5' – well that sez it all 🙂

  13. Russ November 22, 2010 at 4:01 pm - Reply

You absolutly wrong that sports champions needs to have 8feet and where does it say on the box or binsrtuction manual the move needs 8feet. I really wish that people that do not own the stuff only repeat what othet peope write or review. I owned both and I never need 8feet to play my move but kinect requires alot of room and I can speak from experiance because any time I played the kinect it kept telling me to move back because I was to close. I will tell you I only have about 4.5 feet from tv an I have tried the kinect on top of my tv and it worked better but that wad one player but two players forget it and to me that is no fun so I sold it to my sister but enoughabout my experiences. I would also like to say that of all my move games I can only think of onegame that the navi controller would be nice and tgat is tiger woods golf but still it is not necessary to have so not sound rude but i t sounds like you are only writing what you read and are trying to make the cost of the move match the kinect so you can feel better about getting ripped of from Microsoft.

Xbots fanboys so stupid. Did you know that kinect copy from PS2 and re-modify it, PS2 has this type of game back 2000 called playstation eye dummy. I own Wii and PS3 no xbots here. Own a move and play it before talking trash, I played move games and I had only 3 feet from tv and it's working. M$ need to invest and create their own things instead copy then re-modify and sale it at sky rocket price. Playstation came 10 years ago with a game bundle and it cost only $70 with camera. So xbots fanboys do some research before trash talking something that you don't know.

  15. King November 22, 2010 at 9:24 pm - Reply

Prince, your comments are a bit foolish. Yes the kinect is a complete copy of the eye toy, but the move is a complete copy of the wii, so who cares. Also, in response to 'playing the move properly', paid £40 for my move set up I would NEVER buy the additional controller. My dual shock works perfectly. Like saying to play computer game properly you need a £3000 pc with surround sound and 3d tv etc. May as well just play cards for £2.99!

Hahahhaha at least move and wii are made for this generation console. Not bringing the old to the new and said yeah we come up some thing new hahahahhahahah, xbox big time. Kinect would be at $50 not $199. Only dumb ass falling for what M$ say. Wake up and smell the coffee xbots fanboys.

    LOL?

At least microsoft's kinect is bringing in new things to the gaming industry unlike move, which is absolutely a total copy of the wii.

I own both an xbox and a ps3. I'd say PS3 is better than xbox, but Kinect is better than move

Prince you need to stfu you hypocrite, calling others xbox fanboys when you are a stupid PS fanboy.

What new thing dummy, we play that type of game on PS2 called Playstation eye. It's ten years old stupid, Wii mote and move are new stupid. Gues you're not a gamers. Go do some research xbots fanboys.

Prince, the EyeToy is not the same thing as Kinect. The Kinect performs image recognition on a webcam, not a 3D depth map of the human body (as Kinect has). With EyeToy, you were able to move your hands about on a 2D plane to interact with a game. With Kinect, your body's position in space is calculated, so you have an entire 3D volume to play in. As an EyeToy owner, it is absolutely clear to me that it is not as sophisticated as Kinect.

Fanboys…one can be a fanboy, but you have to be honest…Atari back in the 80s made a prototype controller that was a headband on your head, it didn’t work well and was dumped and quite primative…could you call any similar device created today, just copying Atari?
The PS2 Eye Toy is like an old film camera from the 1800s, compared to a high end digital camera. If Eye Toy worked well, it would not have flopped and Sony would have kept it.
The PS3 move does work well and is the Wii controller everyone expected from Nintendo when it was first released. Kinect is not for FPS, or related games, but for a whole new world of games that require full body movements in 3D space…games never possible in the past. I own all 3 new consoles, plus at least one of every retro console released to NA with the exception of a Neo Geo.
System costs for Kinect Vs Move? If one can count their fingers and toes, one can easily see the extra costs for 2 players on a Sony Move vs Kinect. Don’t be offended if you are a Sony boy, but just like buying a Wii, it costs more if you need to purchase extra remotes and nunchuks…so smarten up.
    Cheers,

Been trying to get a Kinect for myself and another for an Xmas present, everywhere I've been has been sold out!

I've pre-ordered 1 for when they get more stock but they couldn't tell me when that would be, does anyone know somewhere that has stock?, I'm worried that I won't get one before Xmas.

  23. Ob November 26, 2010 at 3:28 pm - Reply

Some of you say that Kinect is different from the Eyetoy. Well, the technology part of it might be different i.e. 3D spacial movement, depth perception. The player's actions and experience is however, the same. Bounce around your living room waving your arms is the same regardless of the input. I don't care if it has 3D or whatever. It's the same bounce-around-wave-nothing-in-hand thing. That's why we say they are essential the same.

Another thing, if it's true that Kinect sales didn't impact PS3 or Wii sales, then it would seem Kinect buyers are current 360 owners. It seems ridiculous to spend that kind of money on a new 360+Kinect when you can rather spend it on a new 360 plus games (not Kinect games).

The Kinect includes an extension for your Wifi adapter and the power cord for those who have the original Xbox 360.

Costs for 2 players for move adds up to about the same as one Kinect.

The biggest difference for party games is that my friends can come over and bring theyr move and we play games with 4 players simultaniously.

With Kinect it's completely impossible to play games with more than 2 players at the same time.

So the extra controller money actualy does do something, as where a Kinect adds nothing a controller doesn't do allready. Don't get me wrong, I like the XBox, but I think Microsoft made a big mistake taking the controller out of the game. I think to save it from being a hugh flop they will have to provide some sort of hardware with the future Kinect games to make it a useful system.

A lot of people are hyped up about it right now, but they will be disapointed when they see that for things like voice recognition they didn't need a Kinect, that's just software and a microphone, it's the XBox which does the recognition NOT the Kinect.

My personal opinion, in a year or so Kinect will lose it's momentum because of user disapointment and lack of good games.
