Mobile game apps have been enjoying a lot of the limelight over the past year or so, and with apps like Angry Birds  jumping to the toy and film industries, other popular names are also getting the green light on launching other products.

Ape Entertainment announced that it has signed an agreement with Cut the Rope developer Zepto Labs to develop a digital comic book series based on the popular iOS and Android app. Ape Entertainment launched a digital comic book for another mobile app, Pocket God. The partnership was revealed at this week’s Comic-Con at San Diego.

Zepto Lab has called the game “one of the best-selling iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad games of all time,” and will be using the digital comic book series to create a backstory for main character Om Nom, who players must feed with candy by cutting a series of ropes.

“Om Nom has become a fan favorite and he has an amazing backstory,” said Misha Laylin, chairman of ZeptoLab. “This new comic book series will tell that story and introduce fans to a cast of characters and storylines that will unfold in future iterations of the game.”

At the Comic-Con convention, Ape Entertainment CEO David Hedgecock released a statement:

“Its an amazing opportunity to work with ZeptoLab on one of the app world’s most addictive and successful games. The comic book series is shaping up beautifully and we are making something that we know fans of Cut The Rope and fans of good entertainment everywhere are going to absolutely love!”

Next month, Zepto Lab and Ape Entertainment will publish the Cut the Rope digital comic as a stand-alone app via the iTunes App Store.
