We all know that most of the weirdest things we see come from Japan, with all their creative (and funny) inventions with unusual purposes. Now, a new item that helps stop snoring has been developed by the Japanese. A group of researchers from Waseda University has come up with a robotic polar bear pillow that flips over a user’s head in their sleep to stop them from snoring. When a person’s head is flipped, it opens up airways that cause the annoying sleeping sound. The pillow, which is called Jukusui-kun, features a built-in...

We’ve featured a fair few gadget pillows in our time, first there was the Angry Birds inspired pillows and then the Ostrich pillow which allowed users to sleep on the job. Now the genius that is Bryan Ku has unveiled a new range which takes the humble pillow fight to an entirely new level. The range includes a Saracen sword, battle axe, nunchucks, death stars, grenades and  our personal favourite, the lightsaber....

Not content with shooting zombies and alien invaders, a student at Kingston University in London has designed a laundry machine that also works as a video game arcade. The Amusement Washing Machine, designed by Lee Wei Chen, resembles an arcade video game console. The funny thing about it is that the bottom half is a washing machine. Lee Wei has linked the arcade and the washing machine’s circuitry, so that the machine becomes dependent on the player’s progress in the game. If the player struggles while playing the game, coins...

Designers at 10 Design have come up with a house that uses a set of hydraulic levers that pulls it into the ground when it is activated by high-velocity winds. Once the house is moved underground, the roof locks to prevent flood water and wind from entering the premises. “Isn’t...

After selling millions of his towel-less dryers, bladeless fans and bagless vacuum cleaners, Sir James Dryson has developed a new device that warms rooms. Sir James’ new product, called the Dyson Hot, uses a technology first developed for the Air Multiplier to generate air flow without moving parts. The Dyson Hot is a mile away from the conventional fan heaters that have remained unchanged for more than 30 years. “Other fan heaters rely on inefficient motors or dust friendly grills,” explained Dyson. “As the heat...

A group of scientists at the University of Birmingham has devised a way of making surfaces made from stainless steel  resistant to bacteria. The project, which was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, culminated this week. Instead of coating copper or silver on the steel surface, researchers tried to include it in the steel itself, making it very tough and resistant to wear and tear. The technique also makes the stainless steel surfaces kill bacteria. These surfaces are aimed to be used in hospitals in order...
