Sunday 3rd April is Mothering Sunday in the UK but this isn’t the celebration that has tongues wagging on Google today.
The Californian based search engine has rolled out a brand new Doodle to mark the 119th anniversary of the very first Ice Cream Sundae; well the first documented one at least.
The first Ice Cream Sundae was made on Sunday 4th April 1892 in Ithaca, New York. Reverend John M. Scott went to the Platt & Colt Pharmacy for his usual vanilla ice cream which he ate from a dish. On that day the owner decided to serve the ice cream in a champagne glass with syrup and candied cherries. As the two gents pondered what to name the new dish they realised it was Sunday, stuck the two together and came up with ‘ice cream Sundae’. The rest as they say is history.
Today’s Google Doodle shows a traditional sundae with different flavoured ice-cream, whipped cream, strawberries, nuts and of course cherries on top (compete with stalks).
Once again Google has delivered an anniversary that not many among us would have known about, it’s a cracking one too and one that we suggest you all celebrate.
What’s your favourite sundae and what do you think of today’s Google Doodle?
